Oh deer! Wild animal spotted in downtown Vancouver

A deer was wandering downtown Vancouver earlier this morning (July 21).

The young animal was spotted making its way down Granville Street. It then proceeded west, onto Howe.

Mary Pynenburg posted the photograph above at approximately 8:45 a.m. Roughly ten minutes later, the picture below was taken by Kate Lawrence.

More photographs appeared on social media as the morning continued.

Around 9:45 a.m., it looked like the deer had moved east, down into Yaletown.

And then just a few minutes later, it was spotted up in the West End.

The Vancouver Police Department said that wildlife conservation officers are aware of the deer and on their way to assist the animal. In the meantime, the VPD requested that people give the deer space and refrain from crowding the animal.

There’s no word yet on where the lost-looking animal came from or how it got so deep into the city’s downtown core.

Early in the afternoon, the deer was seen leaving urban areas and entering Stanley Park.
