Vancouver, Victoria, Masset, and Castlegar all have rainbow crosswalks that show those cities' support for the LGBTQ communities. Prince Rupert and Terrace are also planning to install rainbow crosswalks.

Now New Westminster is the latest B.C. municipality to install a permanent rainbow crosswalk.

Today (July 27), the city unveiled its rainbow crosswalk at Church Street and Columbia Street in the downtown business district.

"In addition to the freshly-painted rainbow crosswalk, rainbow lights will shine at Anvil Centre (Eighth and Columbia Streets) during Pride Week," a city news release states.

The New West Pride Festival takes place August 8 to 15.

On Facebook, the New West Pride Society had this to say about the new rainbow crosswalk: "Wow. It's a thing of beauty! A proud moment to say we live in New Westminster! Big thank you to the City of New Westminster on behalf of the LGBTQ2+ residents."

The New Westminster Public Library is also showing its Pride spirit.

“The City of New Westminster embraces and celebrates diversity in our community,” Mayor Jonathan Coté said in the release. “Our citizens understand that together we are stronger and these initiatives are a visible and tangible way to show our support for the LGBTQ community.”
