Vancouver’s first photography festival, Capture Photography Festival, runs from October 1 to November 15. The not-for-profit event celebrates Metro Vancouver’s photography scene with more than 50 exhibits at museums, galleries, and artist-run centres as well as public art installations and multi-platform programming across the city.

“Capture will present work from local, international and emerging artists in an annual showcase that is long overdue,” Julie Lee, Capture Photography Festival director, stated in a news release.

Festival highlights include “The Photo Show: 1969/2013—Exploring the Photo Conceptual Archive” at UBC’s newly located AHVA Gallery. The exhibit will feature works by Iain Baxter, Christos Dikeakos, Robert Smithson, Jeff Wall, and Ian Wallace. Also, “Ensuing Pictures: The Peer-to-Peer Exhibition” at Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s Concourse Gallery includes the work of Vikky Alexander, Jim Breukelman, Mark Lewis, Mark Ruwedel, and Jeff Wall.

Fans of rock ‘n’ roll and celebrity culture won’t want to miss Greg Gorman’s exhibition at the Pendulum Gallery. The display of intimate portraits includes Tom Waits, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, Christopher Walken, and Johnny Depp.

Also worth mentioning is the Capture in Transit Competition. Earlier this summer, the festival asked B.C.-based photographers to submit their work, and Jaimie Dolinko has been declared the winner. Dolinko’s work is on display at the King Edward Canada Line station. From now until November 10, the public is encouraged to vote for the Georgia Straight People’s Choice Award for the Capture in Transit Competition.
