Gwen Stefani split with Gavin Rossdale proves there's no hope for any of us

Now that we’ve had a couple of day to process the information, there’s only one thing to take away from the bombshell announcement: there is no hope for any of us in a relationship.

In case you were away at the cottage without internet access, one of the most enduring couples in the entertainment world has decided to call it quits. Gwen Stefani, 45, and Gavin Rossdale, 49 announced that they are splitting after 13 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The entertainment-world power couple has three children (Kingston, 9, Zuma, 6, and one-year-old Apollo).

When the two met in 1995, Rossdale was fronting the then-hugely-successful grunge-era band Bush, which was headlining hockey rinks. Stefani was the singer of No Doubt, which at that point was playing small clubs.

Over the years, however, the power balance shifted. First No Doubt went stratospheric in the late ’90s, becoming of the biggest acts in pop music on the back of hits like “Don’t Speak”, “Just a Girl”, and “Hella Good”. Stefani later made a seamless transition to solo artist, hitting multi-platinum with 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

Somewhere along the way, the Los Angeles-born superwoman managed to launch a successful fashion line (L.A.M.B.), ventured into acting with a role in Martin Scorcese’s The Aviator, pumped out a few kids, became the official spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris, and became a judge on The Voice in the States.

Rossdale, meanwhile, put Bush on hiatus after the world stopped caring in the late ’90s, started and disbanded a go-nowhere band called Institute, ventured into acting with such roles as Johnny Moreau on 100th episode of Hawaii Five-0, and reformed Bush. He was also really fond of playing tennis.

As solid as the couple's relationship appeared to be, there were rough patches. Two years after Rossdale and Stefani tied the knot, a paternity test revealed that Rossdale had fathered a child in a previous relationship. Courtney Love went on Howard Stern in 2010 and argued she’d had a 1996 affair with Rossdale while he was together with Stefani, and that the No Doubt singer knew about it.

Rossdale also admitting to have a brief gay relationship with U.K. new romantic singer Marilyn in the ’80s.

Your last relationship, meanwhile, ended because you couldn't stop fighting over dirty dishes being left in the sink.

Who gets the kids on what days isn’t likely to be the only battle in the entertainment's world's latest high-profile split. Stefani is estimated to be worth over $123 million, while Rossdale is said to be worth $34 million. According to media reports there was no pre-nup.

"Courtney Love go on Howard Stern in 2010 and argue she’d had a 1996 affair with Rossdale while he was together with Stefani, and that the No Doubt singer knew about it."

Fix that. Bill is in the mail.

"No hope for any of us." That's what was said when Siouxsie Sioux & Budgie of Siouxsie & The Banshees split after 25 years or so. Sadly, long lived relationships that look so solid have a way of blowing up.

Courtney Love apparently likes talking publicly about how she gets around. I don't try to keep careful track, but have noticed her claiming an affair with Kate Moss in the 1990s, & most controversially, more so for a certain right wing rocker than for her, is she once claimed in an interview she had ****** Ted Nugent when he was at the sophisticated age of thirteen. I can hear Ted now..."But I thought she was eighteen!" Sure, Ted.

So to sum up, the lives of these two are comparable to your average BC resident...wait, HOW, exactly?

Comparison invalid. People of more typical socioeconomic strata usually split up because of either sex or money, with children in a supporting role.

These two professionally famous humans could have just as easily split up for professional (read: PR) reasons, which may also be why they got together in the first place. At least three sets of headlines generated: they split up, she gets someone else, so does he. If either dishes on the other to the press, yet more headlines.

We may never know the truth, and I really don't care. But it's fun to read this wild conjecture. Like a short story about (b)romance among unicorns.
