Squamish Valley Music Festival Band of the Day: Little India

It's almost here. And, no, we're not talking about the upcoming federal election.

No, we’re referring to the Squamish Valley Music Festival, taking place August 6 to 9 at the Logger Sports Grounds and Hendrickson Fields. In anticipation of the big day, we’re rounding up local artists who’ll be playing this year’s event, and getting them to answer some important questions.

Like who they’ll be cueing up on the iPod for the Sea to Sky drive to the site, what they’ll be making sure to pack to make it through their set, the all-time dream festival lineup, and who they plan to stalk backstage. And that’s just the start of our probing. Read on, but not before you pick up your Squamish Valley Music Festival ticket. The last thing you want to miss is today’s featured local artist....

Conan Karpinski, Dallyn Hunt, Andrew Dixon, and Tim Morrison make up Langley's Little India. The band has come a long way during their short two years on the scene, winning not one but two local radio competitions (104.3 FM's Best of B.C. and 99.3 FM's Seeds Competition) in 2014 following the release of their debut EP, Up All Night. They've just come off of a tour with Irish rockband Kodaline, and are looking forward to playing thier first major festival.

      Sea to Sky Playlist

Henrietta "Yeasayer"/ It keeps us just a little weird.
Tame Impala "Yes I'm Changing" / Those feels…
Miami Horror "Colours in the Sky"/ Bass hooks are life.
Caribou "Can't Do Without You" / *Slowly puts on sunglasses*
Bombay Bicycle Club "Overdone" / This is our hype medicine.
Foals "The French Open" / For when you want to see everyone attempt to airdrum the intro and miserably fail.
The Eagles "Peaceful Easy Feeling" / Tradition, man.
Matthew Dear "You put a smell on me" / So that we can feel like we’re on festival drugs without actually taking festival drugs.
Arctic Monkeys "Love is a Laserquest" / For when everyone stops talking and stares out the window.
Natalie Cole "This Will Be" / Probably the only time you will hear Dallyn sing at the top of his lungs, and my goodness is it beautiful.

      Outdoor essentials

      • To make sure we fit in: Sunglasses that are too big for our faces, hats that are too big for our bodies (stay out of that sun, people), paint patterns on our face unique to the person to our left, or substitute all of the above for an animal or banana onesie.
      • At least one piece of electronics to have broken by the end of the weekend.
      • A Sharpie for when the festival claims its first sleeper, spread eagle in the middle of a field somewhere.
      • Conan would make sure he packed an intensely patterned tank top with shorts to most definitely not match, which perfectly balances Tim completely dressed in black.
      • To make sure we fit in: Sunglasses that are too big for our faces, hats that are too big for our bodies (stay out of that sun, people), paint patterns on our face unique to the person to our left, or substitute all of the above for an animal or banana onesie.

      I'd love to hang with

Royal Blood – Mainly to approach them and ask if they have any suggestions for gathering the pieces of our brains that are currently splattered all over the ceiling of Vogue Theatre since their last visit to Vancouver.

As stellar as this year’s Squamish bill is, what’s your Fantasy Fest line-up?

I would say we would quite enjoy a co-headlining festival featuring Chicago, The Rat Pack and The Eagles. Their undercard would consist of Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, The BeeGees, Sublime, Cat Power, Kasabian, Radiohead, Rancid, The Strokes, TV on the Radio, and 7th Day. Basically, the most random group of musicians thrown into a weekend to ensure of a good, weird time.

      What’s your official rider request?

      • Jameson
      • Bananas
      • Mint Nasal Spray
      • Green Tea
      • Beer
      • A room to dance around in
      • And no negative Nancys, please!

Trivia time: What's Squamish's official slogan?

Squamish: Whistler, but with less Aussies.

The Squamish Valley Music Festival takes place at Hendrickson Fields & Logger Sports Ground. Quick—what’s your favourite logger sport?

Hands down, Caber Toss. Andrew has experience in this sport, and by experience we mean champion log-tosser.

      Bonus video!

Little India met up with the Straight to talk Squamish, festivals, and the Squamish Festival.
