The Kronos Quartet launches the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts’ 2013-14 season with KRONOS at 40 on Saturday (October 19) at 8 p.m.

The concert will celebrate Kronos’ 40th anniversary season with the world premiere of Philip Glass’ String Quartet No. 6, as well as a selection of pieces from the ensemble’s 2009 album Floodplain.

“We feel enormously privileged to host this historic, world premiere concert,” Joyce Hinton, co-managing director of the Chan Centre stated in a news release. “One of our mandates is to commission new works, and it is wonderful to be able to do so on the occasion of both Kronos’ anniversary season, as well as the UBC Faculty of Arts’ 50th anniversary.”

Kronos is one of the most celebrated ensembles in the world. Their accolades include the Avery Fisher and Polar Music Prize, as well as a Grammy award for Best Chamber Music Performance.

Tickets to KRONOS at 40 can be purchased online in advance. Ticketholders will have access to a special lecture given by Philip Glass prior to the concert.
