SFU bagpipers have won the world title six times, but alas, it wasn't to be this year.

The renowned pipe band was among 12 short-listed to reach the final round in Glasgow.

But when the music ended, the SFU band ended up in the fifth spot. It was an improvement over last year's seventh-place finish.

The winner was Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia, which is based in Scotland. The Laurence O'Toole Pip Band from Ireland came second.

The reigning world champions for the past four years, the Field Montgomery Pipe Band from Northern Ireland, ranked fourth.

The SFU Pipe Band took the title in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2008, and 2009.

The SFU Pipe Band may have finished fifth at the World's, but that still makes them the #1 pipe band in North America (all the bands that finished ahead of them were from Scotland or Ireland).

And let's not forget the Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band, the other entry from the Lower Mainland -- finishing in 11th place (and second among all North American bands)!
