B.C. stunner Violent up for Oscar consideration

After reaping uniform raves and all the Leo Awards that count, Vancouverite Andrew Huculiak's extraordinary debut feature Violent is being considered as Canada's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at next year's Academy Awards.

“We are so honored that this labour of love project is being considered by the Canadian selection committee... what better way to celebrate this honor than in our home city?" said Huculiak in a media release, referring to the film's upcoming run at the Vancity Theatre, from August 28 to September 3.

That theatrical run is necessary to complete the film's Oscar eligibility.

Conventionally, the nomination would go to a Quebecois film, but Violent—which is about the dying moments in a young woman's life—was shot in Norway, in Norwegian, demonstrating just how clever those little fuckers at Amazing Factory productions really are.

Andrew Huculiak is 25-years-old. Orson Welles was not available for comment.

Conned into seeing this film at VIFF. One of the most overrated, cliche, predictable and just plain dumb Can Con flicks I've seen in a while. That it was shot in Norway and had some pretty (if standard) music video stylings (not a surprise since the "Director" leads a pop band) seems to have fooled (some) critics that this is "deep" and "edgy".

"Twilight Zone" did the same basic plot 50 years ago on a tiny black and white half hour anthology budget...and did it with more unpredictability and actual character empathy. This pretentious dud is a shining example of Everything Wrong with hack Canadian wanna be "filmmakers" and the reason no one pays real money to see their Pseudo "art" films in theatres. More wasted Canadian tax (TeleFlimFlam) dollars.
