Lions Gate Bridge bump sees bus traffic diverted to SeaBus terminals

A metal bump on the Lions Gate Bridge that is causing massive delays for Lower Mainland commuters will see no transit traffic tonight.

Buses that usually cross the bridge between downtown Vancouver and the North Shore will be diverted to either Waterfront Station or Lonsdale Quay so travellers can use the SeaBus instead.

This change includes all routes that travel over the bridge, including the 240, 241, 246, and 247 bus routes.

A third SeaBus will be added to the afternoon schedule today (August 20) to help ease wait times for passengers. Trips will run every 10 minutes.

Regular service will resume on Saturday.

The 4.5-centimetre thick bump was put in place at the southern end of the Lions Gate Bridge due to ongoing bridge work.

Lane closures are scheduled for the Lion's Gate for most of the weekend.

A cheeky Twitter account is following the delays.

Is anyone asking the Ministry of Transportation why 1.) they scheduled this work for the height of tourist season when the Lions Gate sees some of its heaviest traffic volumes? 2.) why it took them 7 days to figure out that the bump was causing massive traffic disruptions and to decide to do something about it? and 3.) why it takes four hours to remove a disabled truck from the approach to the Second Narrows...again, and again, and again?

The obvious solution is to close the Lions Gate to everything but bicycles and pedestrians.

Also, isn't it the Lions' Gate Bridge? There are two Lions, not one.

Officially it has no apostrophe, which I should know after living here for a decade. I'll fix it up.

The City Watch folk can't pin this one on Gregor! But I'm sure they'll try.
