East Van Garbage Watch: Illegal dumping returns to Fraser and 58th

    1 of 12 2 of 12

      East Vancouver smells like shit.

Between West Coast Reduction's rendering plant on North Commercial, the vomit and urine streaking the sidewalks and alleyways after special events, and the epic piles of garbage, it's hard to argue that the east side of town smells like anything other than rancid death.

To wit, I present East Van Garbage Watch (patent pending): a semi-regular series of photos of disgustingness.

Today we return to a Dumpster I've covered in this corner before: one outside an apartment building in the alley near Fraser Street and 58th Avenue.

      This time, though, it's worse.

Here's the site on August 17: pretty much par for the course for this spot.

Here's how it looked this morning (August 25):

What a beautiful sight to wake up to.

The gargantuan pile contains at least a dozen mattresses, two couches, and who knows how many rats.

The apartment building that the Dumpster services is slated for demolition, which may account for most of the abandoned furniture littering the site.

Needless to say, the neighbours are not pleased.

The city inspector for this site has been notified.

How can you help prevent trash piles like this?

      1. Report problems you see to the City of Vancouver via 3-1-1 or via the VanConnect app.

      2. Dispose of large items at the South Vancouver transfer station at 377 West Kent Avenue.

      3. Don't have a vehicle? Hire someone to get rid of your garbage for you. Craigslist is full of people who'll haul away your discarded items on the cheap.

Have a Vancouver garbage photo you want to share? East Van Garbage Watch welcomes trash photos from anywhere in the City of Vancouver. Send photos via Twitter to @charenton_ or email webeditor@straight.com with the photo's location, date it was taken, and any other observations you may have.
