Greens mock fishy Conservative campaign ad

Last week, the Conservatives promised to spend $15 million of Canadians' money on protecting B.C. salmon habitats and estuaries if voters keep them in government.

In support of that announcement, Stephen Harper's Twitter account sent out a promotional graphic.

      What's wrong with this picture?

There was just one problem with the image: that's an Atlantic salmon, not a Pacific one.

Atlantic salmon are (controversially) farmed on the B.C. coast, but it's not their natural habitat.

Eventually, the Conservative party replaced the image with one featuring a Pacific salmon.

      That's more like it.

But not fast enough to escape being mocked by the Green party, which tweeted the original ad marked with red corrections.

It was actually Alexandra Morton who called it. The Greens then mined it for political advantage.

Donald Gutstein wrote "Harperism - How Stephen Harper And His Think Tank Colleagues Have Transformed Canada." It's extremely informative, not to mention timely. I'm plowing through that (and Michael Harris's "Party Of One") right now. I highly recommend. It occurred to me that a synonym for Harperism might be 'sneakyism'. Look at the think tanks that they partner with. They usually use geographical names so as to hide their ideology, as Donald Gutstein notes. Well, Why would you do that if you are actually offering citizens a good deal?

The thing about rightwingers is that they are big believers in breaking the rules. They enjoy it. And they've found that it's a way to get on top, from which position they can then dominate, dictate and take. And torture (sometimes literally, as Maher Arar can attest and as any number of hapless Afghan detainees passed around by Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan can attest).

Nice move Greens! I think Canadians might be more interested in checking you out (Are you ready?) now that the NDP is neoliberal through and through.

It's actually been found to be not only an Atlantic salmon but one from the British Isles!! What a party of clowns.
