New Oxford Dictionary manspreads the use of language in a world that's a little less cis

Here at the Georgia Straight, we're often confronted with new words that reflect how folks communicate these days.

I can't tell you how often I've run to the online urban dictionary to ferret out the meaning of terms like "investment banger" and "full foie gras".

Now, the mighty old Oxford Dictionary appears to be catching up with the times with its online edition.

"NBD, but are you ready to fangirl over our dictionary update? Abso-bloody-lutely. We’ve got some awesomesauce new words – no, rly – that will inform and entertain whether you’re hangry or it’s already wine o’clockMic drop," it says on its blog.

Manspreading has also made it into the dictionary. By now, it's a well-known term to describe those jerks who spread their legs wide to take up too much room on transit vehicles, in airports, and anywhere else where their egos can't be held in check.

Hangry, for the uninitiated, refers to that blend of being hungry and angry—i.e. being irritable because of an empty stomach.

Redditors are those who have registered on the website Reddit.

The most popular word on oxforddictionaries.com this morning is cisgender, which is an adjective "denoting or relating to someone whose sense of personal identity corresponds with the gender assigned to them at birth".

That's very different from being transgender, of course.

But it doesn't mean that if you're cis, you can't be one of their allies.
