Things to do in Vancouver this weekend from September 4 to 6

      From the EDM of Major Lazer (above) to the bluesy stylings of Ben Harper, there's lots happening in Vancouver this weekend. And Bumbershoot is just a quick blast across the border, don't forget.

      FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

      BIGAustralian indie-rock duo Big Scary (above), composed of Tom Iansek and Joanna Syme, plays the Cobalt, touring in support of upcoming release.

      BEN: the Georgia Straight presents American soul-blues guitarist-vocalist Ben Harper (above) reuniting with his band the Innocent Criminals for their first tour in seven years, with guest Benjy Ferree. Concert takes place at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park.

      BABES: Minneapolis, Minnesota punk-rock band Babes in Toyland (above), featuring vocalist-guitarist Kat Bjelland, plays the Biltmore Cabaret.

      BRILLIANT: screenings at Vancity Theatre of of director Alex Gibney's documentary Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine (above), which takes a look at the personal and private life of late Apple CEO.

      BLUE-EYED: Philly blue-eyed soul duo Daryl Hall & John Oates plays the PNE as part of the Summer Night Concerts series. Free with PNE admission; reserved seats also available.

      BEAUTIFUL: TAIWANfest kicks off in downtown Vancouver, featuring EDM band Magic Power, Taiwanese street food, fashion exhibit the First Impressions, a lifestyle-craft showcase, a film screening, contemporary dance, and "The Gifts of the Sun" photography exhibit (above).

      SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

      BUMBERSHOOT: Seattle's annual music and arts festival features a vast array of performers, some of which include (in alphabetical order): Bassnectar, Big Data, Cake, Devotchka, Ellie Goulding, Emancipator, Faith No More, Fitz & the Tantrums, Flosstradamus, Hozier, Minus the Bear, Neko Case, Peaches, Social Distortion, the Airborne Toxic Event, the Cave Singers, and the Weeknd (above).

      BANGIN' BEATS: New York City-based DJ-producer songwriter duo the Chainsmokers, consisting of members Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, play the Commodore.

      BRETT: Canadian country artist Brett Kissel (above) performs at the PNE as part of the Summer Night Concerts series. Free with PNE admission; reserved seats also available.

      BARD: Bard on the Beach presents performances of King Lear (above) and Love's Labours Lost at Vanier Park.

      BUG: take a closer look at local insect life in the Shutterbug photography exhibition at Beaty Biodiversity Museum.

      SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6:

      BLOCK: Blueprint and Live Nation present the Mad Decent Block Party at the PNE, featuring EDM performances by Major Lazer, Dillon Francis, Netsky (above), Humans, Party Favor, and Grandtheft. Part of the Summer Night Concerts series; tix at Ticketleader.

      BLONDE: Canadian pop-rockers Platinum Blonde ("It Doesn't Really Matter") play the PNE as part of the Mosaic Music Series. Free with PNE admission.

      BLOODY: Toronto hard-rock band Bloody Diamonds (above) plays Studio Records, with guests Elizabeth and Caustic Sodapop.

      BEER: the Craft Beer Fest at the PNE features beers from a number of breweries, including Big Rock Brewery, Granville Island Brewing, Parallel 49 Brewing Company, Powell Street Craft Brewery, Red Truck Beer, and Steamworks Brewing Co.

      BLESSINGS: TAIWANfest presents Jade Dance Theatre (above) in a performance that celebrates the Taiwanese custom of giving red eggs to celebrate the birth of a baby.
