A new 12-part series by acclaimed director Oliver Stone is coming to Vancouver.

Called The Untold Story of the United States, the documentary project was picked up by the Vancouver Biennale, a non-profit organization that describes itself as a celebration of art in public space.

It will air on the Vancouver Biennale’s website with a new epside released the first Wednesday of each month.

“Derived from recently declassified material and archives from around the world, this twelve-part documentary takes a hard look at the under-reported and under-publicized events that shaped key moments in the 20th century,” reads media release. “Oliver Stone presents a counter-narrative to the customary stories revolving around the United States of America.”

The release goes on to quote Stone on the series: “We were the centre of the world,” he said. “There was a manifest destiny. We were the good guys.”

The Untold Story of the United States covers the period from World War II to the presidency of Barack Obama.

The Straight's Adrian Mack connected with Stone in June 2014 for a discussion about the project. He described it then as the work of a "provocateur for the truth" whose work has "demystified decades of consensus thinking about everything from the Cold War right up to the 'Age of Terror'".

“People forget this stuff because they move on to the next incident and the next incident. Then we’re into the Iraq war; we now readily admit it was a fabrication like Gulf of Tonkin was. They snowball, but so many things get forgotten,” Stone told the Straight. “It’s maddening.”

The first episode goes up at VancouverBiennale.com today (September 2).
