Kay Meek gets set to jam with the Stones

You don’t usually associate the Kay Meek Centre with old-school rock ’n’ roll decadence, but the West Vancouver venue is about to rumble with the sound of the Rolling Stones at the peak of their diabolical powers.

On October 2 and 3, the Kay Meek joins Capilano University’s Cap Global Roots Series in presenting Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!, a live celebration of the Stones’ 1970 live album of the same name. Led by guitarist-producer extraordinaire Steve Dawson, a heavy-hitting roster of local artists will lay into the album’s 10 tracks: Barney and Dustin Bentall, Jim Byrnes, Shawn Hall, Rich Hope, Craig Northey, Dawn Pemberton, Ndidi Onukwulu, Roxanne Potvin, Ralph Shaw, Shawn Verrault, and Colleen Rennison. Which leaves the question: which one will be pulling their belt off for the full nine-minute version of “Midnight Rambler”?

If you need a reminder of the historical moment, check out the Maysles brothers’ classic 1970 Stones documentary Gimme Shelter, with its footage of the Madison Square Garden show featured on the album. Of course, you’ll recall that this was the tour that ended at Altamont. So if anyone at the Meek suddenly suggests moving the show outdoors and getting the Hells Angels to work security, you may want to head for your car.
