In the late 1970s, you could walk into any arcade and see a bunch of stoned teenagers in platform heels rockin' pinball machines like they were starring in the movie Tommy.

The first Pac-Man game was released in 1980 and within a few years, the pinball craze died out.

But it's since made an astonishing recovery in bars around Vancouver. And next week White Rock pinball master Eden Stamm will try to do what no other wizard has done before.

The B.C. champion will try to shatter the record for the longest pinball marathon.

It will take place at the Lamplighter Public House (92 Water Street) in Gastown starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday (September 8).

The existing record is 28 hours of consecutive play.

Stamm is allowed to take a five-minute break each hour as he chases a standard that has stood since 2007.

If Stamm succeeds, it will occur at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (September 9). That will be smack dab in the middle of the Lamplighter's New Replay Pinball Tournament.

“We’ve been hosting our own pinball tournaments for some time now and we had the idea of trying to break a pinball world record," said Damon Holowchak of Donnelly Group, which operates the Lamplighter. “When Eden agreed to be part of the record attempt we got in touch with Guinness to begin the process of applying to have our record attempt certified."
