How to donate via text message to typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines

Typhoon Haiyan has affected almost 9.8 million people and displaced about 660,000 people in the Philippines, according to the United Nations. As many as 10,000 people may have died in the city of Tacloban alone.

Canadians can use their cellphones to donate money to typhoon relief efforts. The Mobile Giving Foundation Canada says the following charities are accepting text message donations for this purpose:

      • Canadian Red Cross: Text REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5.
      • UN World Food Programme: Text RELIEFNOW to 45678 to donate $10.
      • World Vision Canada: Text WORLD or AID to 45678 to donate $20.

The federal government has said it will match eligible donations by Canadians with its own Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund.

It is a rather unfortunate situation, but why not donate the money to local charities/organizations right here in our own back yard? The homeless, less fortunate, impoverished families, orphans, children's hospital, fire fighter's fund, etc... Oh right, it's not as trendy as donating over seas, nor does it give you that "cool factor".

In addition to local charities I also, whenever I am able, donate to overseas situations like this because of the devastation and need rather than some perverse desire to look cool. I'm sorry that you feel a storm destroying one’s home, killing loved ones, and taking all of one’s worldly possessions is merely an “unfortunate” situation—sort of like missing the bus. Grow up!
