Vancouver mourns (likely) death of downtown deer in Stanley Park car crash

Last July, a young deer captured Vancouver hearts when it took a stroll through the city’s downtown core. Now, we’re sad to report the animal has likely been killed.

According to CKNW, a deer was struck by a car around 7:30 p.m. last night (September 13) when the animal tried to cross the street just off the south end of the Lions Gate Bridge.

CKNW’s Simon Little wrote on Twitter that the Vancouver Police Department confirmed the deceased deer is the same animal that was photographed on Granville Street and around the West End earlier this summer. The Vancouver park board similarly told Global News it is likely the deer that’s been killed is the so-called downtown deer because the one young animal was the only such deer known to be living in Stanley Park. Other reports caution it is impossible to say for certain if the two sightings do in fact concern the same animal.

"Vancouver mourns..." Seriously!! You city people are a never ending source of mirth. What about the person who hit the deer...it would have caused considerable damage to his car and set off the air bag...I am sure the driver wasn't injured but it would have caused him considerable inconvenience.

I know!...here it comes...the pro-deer faction is about to vilify me...but here's the thing. I live in a small interior town where there are deer in abundance...they eat my wife's vegetable garden and her flower garden all summer long. Every year about a dozen of them are "thinned out" on the highway near our town...but not all of them...unfortunately. And no...I will not be making a contribution to the solid bronze statue or the perpetual scholarship fund in memory of the deerly departed. But keep those comments coming, I think this is going to be fun!

@ eagle_joe You seriously need to calm down. Small town life must really be stressing you out.

No, he is right. Vancouverites are thoughtless clods who step over people overdosing on drugs in the street without a second thought but who get all teary-eyed if a dog or a deer gets hurt.
