Take Back the Night march targets Granville Street
Take Back the Night, a march designed to highlight issues of violence against women, halted all traffic on Granville Street Friday night (September 18) around 8:30 p.m.
The approximately 200 marchers, flanked by a sizable contingent of security and traffic marshalls, started with a 7:30 p.m. rally outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, where speakers addressed topics of resistance to university "rape culture" and aboriginal-women's issues.
According to Vancouver Rape Relief spokeswoman Daisy Kler, in a previous interview with the Straight, the march would target a street that Vancouver women "hate walking down".
Transit buses were diverted to Seymour Street (northbound) and Howe Street (southbound) a few minutes before their normally scheduled Friday 9 p.m. diversion.
