Holiday activities in Metro Vancouver break out the cheer

Every year, it seems the holiday season is upon us just that much earlier. But with such a stellar lineup of concerts, plays, craft markets, and tried-and-true classic activities, there’s no reason not to break out the eggnog.

Theatregoers should be pleased with this year’s crop of holiday plays, which ranges from the snide and sarcastic to the heartfelt. The Santaland Diaries examines the plight of the mall elf, while It’s Snowing on Saltspring features a disenchanted man who gets his Christmas spirit back. An East Van Panto has heroes, villains, and, of course, plenty of audience participation.

The Vancouver Public Library sponsors a showing of Frank Capra's classic 1946 drama It's a Wonderful Life.

In search of classic holiday ballet The Nutcracker? This year, Ballet B.C. is presenting a version of the story about a girl and her magical journey with a soldier-shaped nutcracker who comes alive.

Stuck with hauling around the wee ones? Consider taking in tried-and-true favourites like Christmas at Canada Place, Canyon Lights, Bright Nights in Stanley Park, Festival of Lights, Peak of Christmas, and Illuminations at Heritage Christmas. Keep in mind, though, that events like Christmas at the Cannery: Festival of Trees and Christmas at FlyOver Canada are great for kids too.

With events like Vancouver Christmas Market in your sights, you can peruse wares made by the wealth of creative and local artists and artisans.

If you’re still in search of that perfect tree, stop by Aunt Leah’s Christmas Tree Lots, where proceeds from the sale of all those pines and spruces go towards programs for foster youth and vulnerable moms and babies.
