PETA protests B.C. Dairy Industry Conference in Vancouver
The fifth annual B.C. Dairy Industry Conference kicked off today (November 27) in Vancouver. While the message was undoubtably pro-milk inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were outside sharing an alternative view.
"Drinking milk and consuming other dairy products not only supports animal abuse but also can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and even acne," PETA campaigner Emily Lavender said in a media alert sent out before the protest. "Anyone who values the special relationship between a mother and her baby—no matter the species—should dump dairy products and switch to soy, rice, almond, or any of the other delicious and healthy plant-based milk options on the market."
One eight-year-old protester wore a cow costume in order to illustrate their point that cows produce milk for calves—which are taken away from their mothers soon after birth—not humans.
The three-day conference, organized by the B.C. Dairy Association and the B.C. Milk Marketing Board, features a keynote address by CBC News journalist Ian Hanomansing on Thursday (November 28) at the Vancouver Convention Centre. It wraps up on Friday (November 29).

Good for those protestors! Why are we still drinking cow's milk anyways? Leafy greens, nuts, seeds and other vegetables are all great sources of calcium! Leave the cows alone! Their milk belongs to their own children, not ours.

A slick dairy marketer tried to strike up convos with the protesters but then quickly departed when the protesters asked for proof of the slickster's claim that B.C. cows aren't chained by the neck virtually 24/7.

Stuff like this really frustrates me. As a dairy farmer seeing the ignorance of those who clearly do not understand where they're food comes from or how it gets from farm to table is incredibly frustrating. Milk and other dairy products are vital in providing natural nutrition the human body needs. The cows are a farmers lifeblood, if they are not treated well they will not produce much milk and therefore will take away the farmers profits, therefore they are treated VERY well. Every aspect of farm design is made to better the cows' comfort and health. Also the fact that calves are taken away from their mothers soon after birth is for safety reasons. Dairy cows are actually quite poor mothers and many would kill their calves accidentally if left together. They also produce too much milk for the calf to consume which would result in pain and health problems for the cow. Calves are also incredibly prone to disease and bacteria which can be transmitted inadvertently from the cow to calf if they are left together.
My family works 365 days a year, 14 hours a day. So to see this type of misinformation is quite depressing really. Please educate yourselves on all the facts before protesting next time.

If these guys have such a valid point, why is it they typically have to show up naked, or pull a small kid out of school and have her dress-up like a cow? Dragging a child into these kinds of issues is patently irresponsible if you ask me.

I grew up on a family farm... these people are out of touch with the realities of agriculture. Our animals were practically treated better than I was growing up. PETA are against any and all consumption of animals, that's their real issue.. and protesting dairy is a bit of a stretch. It's certainly a far-cry from the industrial food complex they so often preach about. From my understanding the dairy industry locally is largely just made up of small family owned farms. Thumbs down PETA.

I wouldn't normally draw the parallel between humans and cows but since PETA opened the door... Humans produce more than their needs to cover the needs of others in their ecosystem. Why is it frowned up when a cow can produce milk that is then shared to feed and nourish others? I'm pretty sure we're not taking the milk away from their babies anymore than a soy farmer is when he sells his soy beans.
PETA - time you understand the industry and protest animal mistreatment, not entire food categories.

I am a dairy farmer! If the farmer stopped taking care of the cows who would take care of them. coast money to feed and house cattle. Most cows are bad moms and walk away from their calves and leave them to die!! we do leave the calves with the mom. alot of farms do!! If we did not drink milk the cows would die off you need 1 acre of land per cow. How many can you take care of? And with out cows you could not grow your veggies think on that!!After this we are no longer giving money to PETA
Animals do not belong to humans

First of all nearly 75% of cows in Canada are chained - Source: Canadian Dairy Council I live in the Fraser Valley and see dairy cows all the time stuck in their barns, on cement floors. On rainy days, standing in their feces for hours. If a "dairy" cow were to kill her baby, the ONLY REASON IS BECAUSE HUMANS THINK THEY ARE GOD. Humans have genetically manipulated the original wild cow for thousands of years. If today's dairy cows have too much milk or kill their children, etc. the only reason is because HUMANS HAVE SPECIFICALLY BRED THEM FOR THAT TRAIT. You dairy farmers have fooled most of society, but a few of us know how evil and greedy you are. We know there is no such animal as a "DAIRY" cow. You created these milk machines. These beautiful beings have been messed up and imprisoned because you took advantage of those who cannot fight back. And every farmer says how great their animals are treated and if they didn't they wouldn't produce milk, eggs, whatever. We all know that is B.S. Have you watched CANADIAN FOOTAGE FROM MERCY FOR ANIMALS CANADA ? NOT ISOLATED CASES. I've been inside the best egg farms in the Fraser Valley. High tech. Best equipment. Hens are dying in their cages from prolapse, sitting with broken legs, getting pecked to death from the other 5 hens crowded in with her. Barely able to move for 14 months. Animals are not machines. Animals are living beings who feel pain, get scared, want freedom, want families. Leave animals alone. And stop sticking your arms up their behinds to impregnate them. SICK PEOPLE

You people need to get a life. Many animals ( including my dog who nursed my kittens when there mom died) drink other animals milk. Plus we eat cheese and chocolate and yogurt and sour cream ..I think you all have large mental health issues and PETA kills more animals than it saves.
