Want to know where your Vancouver tax dollars are going? Read this
The City of Vancouver has just released its proposed $1.2-billion budget for 2014.
There were 603,512 people living in Vancouver in the 2011 census. So for fun, I've listed the proposed budget figures in different categories with the per-person expenditure in parentheses.
1. Utilities: $262.2 million ($434.46)
2. Police: $234.9 million ($389.22)
3. Parks and recreation: $108.2 million ($179.28)
4. Fire and rescue services: $98.4 million ($163.05)
5. Engineering public works: $75.2 million ($124.60)
6. Corporate services: $112 million ($185.58)
7. Libraries: $44 million ($72.91)
8. Planning and development: $18.9 million ($31.32)
9. Housing: $13.3 million ($22.03)
10. Cultural grants: $10.8 million ($17.89)
11. Mayor and council: $2.3 million ($3.81)
12. Cultural administration: $1.8 million ($2.98)
This doesn't account for the entire city budget, but it gives you a reasonable idea of where the money is going, and how much it's costing individual taxpayers.
