Nelson Mandela will be buried on Sunday (December 15) in Qunu, South Africa, where he grew up.

In Vancouver, members of the South African community are planning a formal memorial in honour of the anti-apartheid leader and former South African president, who died on December 5.

Organized by the South African Cultural Association of B.C., the memorial will take place at Performance Works on Granville Island from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.)

SACABC organized last week's candlelight vigil in remembrance of Mandela, which took place at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

A news release from the association states: "This memorial will allow for families and people of all ages and backgrounds who may not have had the opportunity to attend the Vigil to also have a chance to pay their respects and reflect on the life of Mandela."

The memorial will have space for 400 people.
