Is this a joke?
"Elma Wang is a student from Fujian who likes to read and wants to become a flight attendant."
Seriously? And is it 1964?

To the critics,

I suggest you read these 2006 articles by Pieta Woolley, which attempted to explain why pageants are enjoying a resurgence in diverse communities across Canada.

Fair enough, Charlie. By this logic one should join the Conservative Party or the Fraser Institute and fight from within to make Canada greener.

Given my many years I would argue that pageants are enjoying a resurgence because Canadians are turning Right (Harper, BC NDP) in response to the crap going on as Empire collapses. Which, by the way, you cover very well.

The danger of objectifying human beings has been written about for a very long time.

Please. So pageants are actually progressive? Give me a break. Some of those "diverse" communities that love pageants so much come from countries that have pretty depressing records on women's rights. I suggest you watch this film as a start: http://www.worldbeforeher.com.

I agree with CCP. How is this "Miss Chinese Vancouver" when only a couple are actually from Vancouver? I believe there's a few who has only been in Canada for a very short while.

This is just a Pageant consisting China ladies taking place in Vancouver. Nothing wrong with that, but should really rename this competition.

More than 45 percent of Greater Vancouver residents were foreign-born in the 2011 census. It wouldn't be a Vancouver pageant if there weren't a lot of foreign-born women participating.

Get over it.

I'm sure there are a lot of born and raised Vancouver and Toronto Chinese females with beauty and talent but they' r not interested in this competition or will have to sacrifice their career for this 3 month competition. Now u got fresh Chinese immigrants or students who come to study , speak poor English who give a try because they got nothing to lose!
It's very difficult to relate to them because you don't know what background they come from. Did they have plastic surgery since it's common in Asia, u can claim u r a student in china is there proof? Fake diplomas are common and what kind of level of education we r talking about.
These factors u can't control but u can better control if candidates we r looking r born and raised in Canada.
Otherwise we might just do a Chinese pageant in china forget about Chinese overseas pageant. It doesn't make sense that u come to canada for few months only and u join this pageantry representing Chinese Canadian . It's not a real depiction of hardworking Chinese Canadian families.
Things to think about is how to encourage born and raised in Canada Chinese girls to participate. A competition that really reflects true talents of Chinese Canadian and their healthy contribution to Canadian society. Natural beauty, speak Chinese and English with confidence about how they give back to Canadians, artistic talents. This is how this pageant shoe becomes exciting.
Moreover the ultimate goal is to search for a talented Chinese overseas to become a successful actress for tvb dramas. Who is watching the dramas? Cantonese speaking ppl duh. So if u pick a mainland Chinese new immigrant what is the point of this pageant?
As a Chinese overseas fan of tvb dramas I look forward to a new Linda Chung or Bernice Liu to have good quality dramas in the long term. And this is how fairchild tv will continue to be a most watched channel among Chinese Canadian .
I encourage everyone to write their opinions to the organizers how they feel about this competition. It's our favourite shows at stake.

It is not a right turn we are taking it is two steps back to pre-WW2 social conditions at best, pre ww1 by the time they are finished destroying what they can't steal-if we survive at all. Only the international working class can take on capitalism and put an end to class based social organization. They will try to say socialism is dead but capitalism is a vampire economy and shoots it self in the foot often enough to let us know that a better world is not only possible but necessary. WE need only be as radical as reality.

To the commentator of "Is this a joke?",

There shouldn't be anything wrong about loving to read and wanting to become a flight attendant. I ask that you respect the hobbies and career goals of others. Careers in this world help the society function. If it were not for flight attendants, nobody would be flying and connections between different cultures, societies and knowledge would not persist, unless one is fully against globalization and deny that it has been beneficial. (One having the internet and a computer to access this webpage would not be available if it weren't for globalization)

If this was the 1964, there would be so many more individuals who disrepect the career goals of others. I am an educator and it frustrates me when people degrade others based on their dreams and goals. Everyone has different skills and contributions.
