All the pretty young things in a 1950s beauty pageant. The Georgia "Straight" indeed.
Is this a joke?

"Elma Wang is a student from Fujian who likes to read and wants to become a flight attendant."
Seriously? And is it 1964?

To the critics,
I suggest you read these 2006 articles by Pieta Woolley, which attempted to explain why pageants are enjoying a resurgence in diverse communities across Canada.

Fair enough, Charlie. By this logic one should join the Conservative Party or the Fraser Institute and fight from within to make Canada greener.
Given my many years I would argue that pageants are enjoying a resurgence because Canadians are turning Right (Harper, BC NDP) in response to the crap going on as Empire collapses. Which, by the way, you cover very well.
The danger of objectifying human beings has been written about for a very long time.

Please. So pageants are actually progressive? Give me a break. Some of those "diverse" communities that love pageants so much come from countries that have pretty depressing records on women's rights. I suggest you watch this film as a start: http://www.worldbeforeher.com.

I agree with CCP. How is this "Miss Chinese Vancouver" when only a couple are actually from Vancouver? I believe there's a few who has only been in Canada for a very short while.
This is just a Pageant consisting China ladies taking place in Vancouver. Nothing wrong with that, but should really rename this competition.

More than 45 percent of Greater Vancouver residents were foreign-born in the 2011 census. It wouldn't be a Vancouver pageant if there weren't a lot of foreign-born women participating.
Get over it.
