One of the most talked-about Christmas releases of the year isn't opening in any local theatres this year.

However, Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac will be shown in his home country of Denmark on December 25. And it has already received a very positive review from the Guardian's Xan Brooks.

The movie stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, who plays Joe, a sex addict who prefers to be called a nymphomaniac.

The film also features Stellan Skarsgard, Shia LeBeouf, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Bell, Jean-Marc Barr, and Udo Kier.

Variety has reported that the uncut version, known as Nymphomaniac Volume I, will be premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

Von Trier is a legendary director and his 1996 film Breaking the Waves won the Jury Prize at Cannes.

Dancer in the Dark, which he released in 2000, took the Palm d'Or at Cannes.

However, von Trier was banned from the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. This came after he made some inflammatory remarks regarding his German ancestry.

"I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy about being a Jew," von Trier reportedly said. "Then it turned out I was not a Jew."

He should have stopped there, but then the director added: "I found out that I was really a Nazi, which also gave me some pleasure. What can say? I understand Hitler. He did some wrong things, absolutely, but I can see him sitting there in his bunker at the end."

If that wasn't enough, von Trier also mentioned that he could "sympathize with him, yes, a little bit".

Later, he apologized to those who were offended, and maintained that he isn't a Nazi, nor is he racially prejudiced.

There was some interesting context for those remarks - believe there's some discussion of the background in an article from that period called "Lars Attacks!" which appeared in Details, might be able to find it out there, well worth a read. Very excited about Nymphomaniac...

I just checked out the Guardian's review you mentioned, and it's absolutely NOT positive! It's more than neutral, I'd call it negative. So your article seems to be just another paid Zentropa's propaganda. They think they will make the film better by hundreds "Wow!" articles. Why the film is out competition on Berlinale? LOL, obviously because it's very good, yes? A piece of art! Hahah
