From October 28 to Nov 8, the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival takes place at over 25 locations throughout the Downtown Eastside.

Presented by Vancouver Moving Theatre in association with Carnegie Community Centre and the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians, the festival gives voice to the Downtown Eastside and its low-income residents, cultural communities, and neighbourhoods.

The 12-day-long event features over 90 events combining music, stories, songs, poetry, cultural celebrations, films, theatre, dance, processions, spoken word, panels, workshops, discussions, gallery exhibitions, multi media, art talks, history walking tours, and a diverse array of artists.

New this year is Against the Current, a cross-cultural performance that explores the role of salmon in Japanese and First Nations history and culture.

Other highlights include the Carnegie Jazz Band, the book launch of From the Heart of a City, guest poets Valerie Mason-John and Bertha Clark, Orkestar Slivovica, and the Ukrainian Dovbush Dancers.
