Top 100 Canadian CEOs averaged $7.96 million in compensation in 2012

      According to a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the top 100 Canadian CEOs took home an average of $7.96 million in 2012.

      The new report, "All in a Day's Work? CEO Pay in Canada", examined the 240 publicly listed Canadian corporations on the TSX Index, and found that the typical CEO pocketed $1,008,280 in annual salary and around $1.73 million in cash bonuses. 

      E. Hunter Harrison, the CEO of Canadian Pacific Railway, took home the most money in 2012; his total compensation package netted him $49.5 million.

      Canada’s highest paid CEOs made the equivalent of an average Canadian's wage—$46,634—by 1:11 p.m. today (January 2).

      The average minimum-wage worker in Canada took home $20,989 in 2012.

      No employee is worth 49.5 million a year. What a travisty. How do the share holders tolerate it?

      Shareholders have nothing at all to say about the salaries of corporate executives. The Board of Directors of the corporation has all the power and, remarkably!, many of the same people appear on Boards of all the large corporations in Canada.
