Photos: Train derailment sends coal into Burnaby creek

    1 of 5 2 of 5

On Saturday (January 11), several CP cars went off the CN railway tracks in Burnaby.

The cars were carrying coal, some of which spilled into Silver Creek, a protected waterway that flows into Burnaby Lake.

According to a Burnaby NewsLeader report, the metallurgical coal was headed for Neptune Terminals in North Vancouver for export.

Kevin Washbrook of Voters Taking Action on Climate Change sent out several photos of the scene.

VTACC opposed last year's approval of the expansion of coal exports at Neptune, and is fighting a coal terminal proposal at Fraser Surrey Docks.

Another good example of why we need more pipelines! Rail is dangerous!! No, wait. Coal pipelines would make a helluva racket. Never mind.

PS - Now that federal Fisheries has ceded its responsibility for wildlife habitat protection to the National Energy Board, along pipeline "corridors", my guess is that the responsibility for rail safety will soon be transferred to The Ministry of Silly Walks.

But only if the pipeline plan is silly enough, of course. The MSW doesn't deal with anything that isn't really silly.

CBC is reporting that CN Rail is officially blaming BEAVERS for this derailment.

Apparently Beavers build a dam on the creek and this is what caused the rail-bed to wash out.

I wonder if whether or not a near total lack of rail-bed inspection might be the real reason.

Despite the name Canadian National - CN is American owned.

How about a $1,000,000.00 per occurrance for derailments - where timely inspections could prevent this type of derailment.

Yah - CN hauls Crude Oil, Compressed Natural Gas and Extremely Toxic Acids and Chemicals on this same line.

      Be afraid, be very afraid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      It's fine,
