A tire fire currently burning in northern England is so huge that it can be seen from space.

The blaze, located at a recycling plant in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire, began on January 16.

Fuelled by 15,000 tonnes of rubber tires, it is expected to burn for another week.

Peter Hudson, group manager for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, told reporters, "we would rather it burnt away to virtually nothing", after conferring with the U.K. Environment Agency.

"If we did put it out, we would have much more sludge and mess to put somewhere afterwards," said Hudson.

According to the Guardian, no major health risks are associated with the fire and the plume of black smoke being emitted, although residents are encouraged to stay indoors.
