A date has been set for another public hearing concerning a massive real-estate development planned for Burnaby.

On February 25, residents and interested parties will have a chance to comment on a redevelopment of Brentwood mall that stands to consist of 11 towers reaching a maximum height of 70 stories.

Called Brentwood Town Centre, the proposal concerns a 28-acre site located where Lougheed Highway crosses Willingdon Avenue.

“It will house 1.3 million square feet of retail, 500,000 square feet of office and high-rise residential towers,” states a project website.

According to a Burnaby city council report, the first phase of the project will consist of a 53-story residential tower to sit atop a three-story commercial complex. According to Shape Properties, the project’s developer, anchor tenants include London Drugs and Sears.

This is a much better use of urban land next to a SkyTrain station than just a parking lot.

Re-development worked beautifully with Middlegate Mall (now HighGate Village). I support it fully. Make use of more than a parking lot. North Burnaby has been expecting this for decades, and as a resident of it, I think it's high time for it! It's a big parking lot with a dead shopping centre (except at lunch) in the middle of it and lots of development around it towards Gilmore and towards Holdom. All I ask is that the infrastructure meets the the impact 11 towers brings. Burnaby General Hospital needs to be upgraded badly, we need more schools besides Alpha and Brentwood, improved SkyTrain station entrance, better policing and fire facilities, traffic re-routing---a lot to be thought about and planned over. Otherwise, bring it on!

I agree. Development in itself should be welcomed. I do have concerns that there will not be adequate infrastructure to meet the needs of the area. Hospitals, transit and schools all require a great deal of municipal and provincial trust, communication and cooperation which is not always evident. The concerns of Shape's neighbours also need to be weighed more seriously than they seem to be. It feels like whatever the developer wants, the City gives. a more robust discussion around town centre development would be welcomed.
