One of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman's greatest triumphs came when he received the Oscar for best actor for playing writer Truman Capote, who was openly gay and wrote the nonfiction book In Cold Blood.

At the time, Hoffman thanked the Vancouver-based producer of Capote, Bill Vince, who died from cancer in 2008.

Hoffman also thanked a lot of other people, as you can see in the video above.

He was found dead in his Greenwich Village apartment today at the age of 46.

He's believed to have died of a heroin overdose.

Hoffman's family issued the following statement: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Pleasse keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
