The John Butler Trio mines deep grooves on Flesh & Blood

Australian roots-jam singer-songwriter John Butler is quite the groove monster on his new album, Flesh & Blood, but he got a lot of help on one of the funkier numbers from his bassist Byron Luiters.

As Butler explained on the line from New York the other day—on a tour that brings him to the Commodore for two sold-out shows—Luiters came up with the “very deep groove” on the track “Livin’ in the City”.

“We were looking for that groove for a while,” explained Butler. “Byron often gets on the kit right before lunch, to do his Snoop Dogg beats, and he came up with that one. I heard him play it and I had my guitar in my hand so it was like, ‘There it is. That’s it. Press record. It’s happenin.’ Yeah.

“That was one of the songs that actually got the whole session on the way,” reported Butler, “kinda popped the top off it.”
