British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards: Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and more

If you didn't know that Gravity was a British coproduction, you do now.

The film collected six awards at the British Academy Film and Television Awards on February 16, including outstanding British film and Mexico's Alfonso Cuarón beat Britain's Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) for best director. The outerspace thriller also won best special effects, beating stiff competition from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, and Star Trek: Into Darkness.  

The historical drama 12 Years a Slave won best film and best lead actor (British star Chiwetel Ejiofor).

Cate Blanchett won best leading actress for Blue Jasmine.

Philomena, about an Irish woman's 50-year search for her son, won the best adapted screenplay award (Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope).

Arthouse director Peter Greenaway, renowned for his distinctive visual and narrative style in films such as The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover and The Pillow Book, received the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award.
