Canucks coach John Tortorella says he wants Sweden to beat Canada in Olympic gold medal match

John Tortorella is coaching a Canadian team, but he doesn't want Canada to win the Olympic men's gold-medal hockey game.

"I hope Sweden wins because I don't think Hammer (Dan Hamhuis) is going to play judging from what's happened and I don't think Louie (Roberto Luongo) is going to play [for Canada]," the Canucks coach told the Vancouver Sun today.

Canucks defenceman Alex Edler and forward Daniel Sedin are expected to be in the lineup for Sweden for the game, which begins Sunday at 4:00 a.m. Pacific time.

Yesterday in a briefing with reporters, Tortorella conceded that he hasn't paid much attention to the Olympics.

He just hopes that the Canucks players return from Sochi healthy and ready to play.

"We're looking for anything for anybody to grab onto to feel good about themselves," Tortorella said. "That's very important for this club."

      Who cares

He sounds peeved they're not playing Luuuuuu and Hammer and likely harbours feelings of resentment given Canada shut down the US yesterday. Evidently, this automatically mean supporting Sweden. You know, while he 'hasn't paid much attention to the Olympics." What insipid logic.

i mean, cheer for whomever you want but how passive aggressive.

I don't care if the Sascwatch from the mountains or the Ogopogo from the waters are going to play or not play in the Gold medal game coming up with Swedes, it's about our Canadian team winning and bringing another medal home to Canada for us all to be proud of. This is a testament of our pride towards all our athletes who give their "all" toward achieving that goal -no pun intended. Go Canada Go.
By the way, the U.S. boarders on greatness... it's called Canada! ;-)

I've never been a fan of Tortorella (who was born in Massachusetts, by the way). I find him to be arrogant and disrespectful of others, and overrated as coach. When he was appointed coach of the Canucks, I predicted they wouldn't make the playoffs. I hope (for Vancouver's sake) I'm wrong.

But Tortorella is not as smart as he thinks he is (I doubt anyone could be as smart as Tortorella thinks he is). And everyone else is not as dumb as Tortorella thinks they are.

Every time this silly little man opens his mouth he says something stupid. He alienates the fans and turns more people off to the Canucks franchise. He should be fired for being an ignoramus.

Forget about the dump ass Canucks and their phoney glory and tacky hype. They aren't once a dollar of your hard earned cash with overpaid coaches like this.

Perhaps all you whiners should read the Province since they bothered to mention his thinking behind the subject (unlike the above article). His point is that since Hamhuis and Luo aren't playing perhaps Edler and Daniel might return with some jump in their game. They are after all a couple of the most important players on the Canucks team. He never said anything negative about team Canada, just that he wanted the Canucks to regain their winning ways. You guys beat up the Americans for their blind loyalty, then you do the exact same thing. Go Canada & Go Canucks.
