Patrick Street Productions presents the Vancouver premiere of Floyd Collins at the York Theatre (639 Commercial Drive) from March 11 to 30. Performances run Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Floyd Collins is based on the haunting true story of an American explorer and entrepreneur. The musical is composed by Adam Guettel, who wrote The Light in the Piazza, and directed by Patrick Street Productions’ co-artistic producer Peter Jorgensen.

“For me, this is a play about two kinds of glory: an old variety that is about divinity and legacy, and a contemporary one synonymous with celebrity and fame,” Jorgensen stated in a news release. “It was his pursuit of the old type of glory that drove Floyd Collins to crawl deep beneath the earth, hoping for a discovery that would make his legacy immortal. In a cruel twist of fate however, he became an early example of the later kind, igniting a short-lived media circus as he lay trapped 100 feet underground.”

Floyd Collins is a 37-year-old cave explorer who becomes trapped while navigating an underground network in 1925 Kentucky. As his family and friends begin a rescue attempt, this even triggers one of America’s first nationwide media frenzies.

The title-role in Floyd Collins will be played by Bermuda-born singer, dancer, and actor Daren A. Herbert, who will be joined by CBC actors Kevin McNulty and Krystin Pellerin, as well as David Adams, Nathan Carroll, Graham Coffeng, Michael Culp, Jay Davis, Michael Torontow, Kris Truelsen, Andrew Wade, Ashley Wright, and Katey Wright. The ensemble will be accompanied by a live six-piece band.

Tickets to Floyd Collins start at $19 and can be purchased online in advance or by phone at 604-251-1363.
