Looking for a truly unique holiday gift? Consider making a donation to the Moose Sex Project.

Helmed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Moose Sex Project seeks to protect the wilderness corridor along the Isthmus of Chignecto, which runs between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The Isthmus of Chignecto connects the Nova Scotia peninsula with the rest of the continent.

It is hoped that protecting this corridor will spur breeding between the endanged Nova Scotian moose population (around 1,000) and their plentiful New Brunswick neighbours (a healthier 29,000).

The Conservancy currently running its fourth annual “Help the Moose Cross the Isthmus for Christmas” campaign in hopes of raising $22,000 this Christmas in order to aquire parcels of private land along the corridor. The project also helps protect other animals and plant species in the region.

Since the project begain, the Conservancy has aquired 2,694 acres of land along the isthmus.

      All donations are tax-deductible.

And now for some moose facts:

      • An average moose weighs 350 to 400 kilograms, with an average chest height of 105 centimetres—in other words, you do not want to lose a fight with a moose!
      • Only male moose have antlers; moose shed them in late fall and re-grow them in spring
      • In winter, a moose eats roughly 15 kilograms of twigs every day
      • Like cows, goats, and giraffes, moose are ruminants, which means they have a four-chambered stomach
      • The combination of a mild winter and an abundant food supply means there is a 90 percent likelihood of a female moose giving birth to twins
      • Moose are adorable!

      • Moose can travel efficiently through snow 40 to 50 centimetres deep, in part because they lift their legs vertically rather than horizontally
      • Moose sex is more properly known as rutting
      • The gestation period for moose is eight months
      • A male moose is called a bull, a female a cow, and the young are calves
      • The plural of moose is moose and not meese, no matter how much I might insist it should be
