Korean percussion ensemble SamulNori with Kim Duk Soo will perform at UBC’s Chan Centre (6265 Crescent Road) for the Performing Arts on Saturday (March 15) at 8 p.m.

“After experiencing an enchanting trip to Seoul two years ago, I knew this compelling showcase of Korean culture would be a perfect fit for the Chan Centre,” Joyce Hinton, co-managing director of the Chan Centre, stated in a news release.

SamulNori was founded in 1978 with four members intent on preserving traditional Korean music and dance. Their style is rooted in nongak, or farmers’ band music, and performances include music, acrobatics, folk dance, and rituals.

The four instruments included in SamulNori are k’kwaenggwari, small gong, representing lighting; ching, large gong, representing wind; changgo, hourglass shaped drum, representing rain, and buk, a barrel drum representing clouds. Under the direction of changgo player Kim Duk Soo, SamulNori has released 15 recordings and toured extensively.

Tickets to SamulNori with Kim Duk Soo start at $36 and can be purchased online, by phone at 1-855-985-2787, or in person at the Chan Centre box office.
