Vancouver meeting scheduled for federal missing-women inquiry

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made good on his election promise to launch a national inquiry into the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls in Canada.

As part of that process, the federal government has scheduled preliminary meetings across the country to help design the structure and mandate of that inquiry. People with a direct interest in that process, or survivors or those with a family link to a victim or victims, are asked to attend these meetings to contribute input and direction.

Vancouver will host one of those gatherings on January 13.

The first meeting happened in Ottawa in December. The next, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, took place on January 6. Another, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, is underway today (January 8). Here is an excerpt from a December 30 release from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada:

The Government of Canada believes that an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls can only be designed after hearing from those directly affected. The government is holding meetings across Canada with survivors, family members and loved ones of victims, as well as national Aboriginal, provincial, and territorial representatives to seek their views on the design and scope of the inquiry.

The first two meetings were held in December 2015 in Ottawa with survivors, families and loved ones; as well as representatives of front-line services and Indigenous organizations.

As of January 4, 2016, here is a list of upcoming meetings:
