Jennifer Lopez has been named the recipient of GLAAD's Vanguard Award at the 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 12.

The award goes to artists and media professionals who help to increase the visibility and understanding of LGBT people.

Lopez is the executive producer of the TV drama series The Fosters, about an interracial lesbian couple in San Diego, California, who are raising biological, adopted, and foster children. It debuted in 2013 and stars Teri Polo and Sherri Saum as the parents.

The singer and actress was inspired by her late aunt, who was a lesbian but was unable to have her own family. Lopez has also been a vocal supporter of LGBT issues and equality, including same-sex marriage.

"Through her work to bring The Fosters to life and by consistently speaking out as a powerful ally, Jennifer Lopez has not only sent a message of acceptance to LGBT adults and young people, but inspired new support for our community among her many fans around the globe," GLAAD CEO and president Sarah Kate Ellis stated in a news release.

Lopez chatted with Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen about the show.

Past winners of the award include Janet Jackson, Antonio Banderas, Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Elizabeth Taylor, and Canadian-American actor Eric McCormack (Will & Grace).
