Sensational Alex Harvey Band to release sensational Alex Harvey Band box set

    1 of 5 2 of 5

Back in the mid-'70s I was crazy about glam rock. David Bowie, T-Rex, Mott the Hoople, the New York Dolls, KISS, Queen--I ate it all up.

In my rush to ingest as much glam as possible I'd often put money down on albums that I judged as cool based purely on the covers. I remember Be Bop Deluxe's Axe Victim being one such 1974 purchase that paid off handsomely with stellar music to accompany the wicked skull-guitar artwork.

Another LP that I picked up in '74 was the Alex Harvey Band's The Impossible Dream. It was on Vertigo Records, the same label as my heroes Thin Lizzy, but that's where the similarities ended.

Although there was some guitarwork to satiate my teenaged riff-lust on "Hot City Symphony Part 1: Vambo", all-in-all I couldn't wrap my head around the music. It was too vaudeville for me. Too music hall. I didn't get it.

Looking back, I probably should have given the Sensational Alex Harvey Band a closer listen--I mean, Alex Harvey was Bon Scott's main hero, after all. But there were just so many incredible bands clamouring for my attention back then that I wasn't into second chances.

Anyone else wondering what they might have missed by not digging deeper into the music of the adventurous Scottish wildman--or those who just plain loved him--should know that a 14-disc, 217-track box set, The Last of the Teenage Idols, is on its way.

      Here's some promotional bumph:

Set in a lavish 10x10” box set and presented in a heavy duty slip case it comes complete with a 60-page hard cover book featuring a new essay by respected Scottish writer, Tim Barr, and loads of rare and previously unseen family photographs and photographs of Alex throughout his career. Of the music it contains, 21 are previously unreleased while a further 59 are appearing officially on CD for the first time.

Highlights in this treasure trove include: a first-time on CD for the debut album by Alex Harvey And His Soul Band; the first official release of the outfit’s second album; and complete remastered albums from the solo years, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and New Band eras, all supplemented by demos, rarities, BBC recordings, B-sides and a 24-minute, spoken-word piece from Alex previously only available on the promo-only ‘Alex Harvey Talks About Everything’.

The Last of the Teenage Idols will be released by Universal Music on March 18.
