Homeless in Vancouver: Adding beef to a Filet-o-Fish cuz why not?
The McDonald’s at Broadway and Granville has added a “Filet-o-Fish LT” to its menu. This is the standard fish sandwich with the “bold” addition of some lettuce and a slice of tomato.
Get it? It’s a BLT but with fish instead of bacon—be still my beating heart!
Personally I think it’s a weak name. I would prefer “Garden Filet-o-Fish”.
It hasn’t been that long since McDonald’s inexplicably added the double Filet-o-Fish, which manages to be at least twice as dull as a regular Filet-o-Fish.
But a Filet-o-Fish with tomato and lettuce has possibilities that I decided to explore today.
Building a better, meatier, Filet-o-Fish
I ordered the FoF LT meal—with large fries and a medium coffee—and I added a single Quarter Pounder patty, which costs $1.30 plus tax.
Haute cuisine it certainly isn’t, but the resulting burger is actually pretty tasty and at least as substantial as a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, which it is almost identical to except for the absence of pickles (which is a loss), ketchup (which you can add), and sesame seeds on the bun (which I didn’t miss).
The resulting McSurf ‘n’ Turf burger costs a total of $9.10 including tax. That’s’s 65 cents leass than an equivalent Double Quarter Pounder meal, which costs $9.75 including tax.
For dessert I might have topped it off with another innovation, a baked pie McFlurry, but at the Broadway and Granville McDonald’s, the ice-cream machine isn’t just down, it has gone to a better place.
You might expect a new ice-cream machine would be a priority—this location is already turning away hundreds of potential ice-cream customers each day and summer is just around the corner.
However, I remember how this location added a new fruit smoothie machine two years ago and went the entire summer without milkshakes because they ran out of room for the old milkshake machine.
In a pinch, the vanilla chai tea iced frappé is very milkshakelike.
