Fan Expo begins with cosplayers, line-ups, and Vancouver's own Twisted Twins

Our correspondent Emily McDonald-Longworth reports from Fan Expo Vancouver (aka FanExpo West), running this weekend until Sunday (April 20):

Day one (April 18) was spent mostly exploring the convention centre to see what we could find. Merchandise and celebrities were top of the list. There are endless opportunities to photograph cosplayers, and you find yourself bumping into a lot of voice actors.

We met both Megan Fahlenbock and Christian Potenza, the voices of Jen Masterson and Jude Lizowski, respectively, from the popular kid's animated TV series 6teen. They sounded exactly like their characters, apparently without even trying.

The lineups to meet attending celebrities—among them Tom Felton from the Harry Potter series, Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, and Robert (Freddy Kreuger) Englund—were unholy, so we didn't bother with that... but there were some cultier personalities who were easy to find.

You've heard of Vancouver's own Soska twins?

They scored international acclaim for the movie American Mary, which they wrote, directed, and premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival in 2012. I brought a friend whose sole reason for coming was to track down the Twisted Twins, and it was pretty cute to see her finally meet her horror idols, hugging and chatting with them. FanExpo West continues today at the Convention Centre in downtown Vancouver. It is open today until 7pm, and Sunday 10-5. Tickets are available at the door for $35 Saturday and $30 Sunday.

There are many great guests to see. Here is a link.

I long for the quiet sophistication of the Kentucky Derby.

I went again this year, but I think it will be my last. The costumes are cool, but $35 is just too much to walk around a crowded convention centre that is almost entirely just booths selling products that I could easily find elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty cool, but is also largely unchanged from last year. I'll probably go again in a few years to see if there is anything new.
