Homeless in Vancouver: This doesn't look a bit like an elephant

It doesn’t even look like an elephant taking a whiz. It looks exactly like what it is—a drain pipe.

Actually it looks like a photograph of a drain pipe and one that I’m disinclined to waste.

I took the photo while deep in the thrall of my last post about Tachowa Covington, the guy living in the water tank—the water tank British street artist Banksy thought looked a bit like an elephant.

Whatever I do on my blog I want to do it with original content wherever possible.

In the case of the Covington post I knew I had to use at least two images off the Internet: one of the water tank and another of Tachowa Covington. In my mind this made it twice as important to head the post with an interesting original illustration of my own creation.

More proof that the camera is a better photographer than I am

This water pipe wasn’t it, but I took something like a dozen photos of it just in case. I had my little adventure camera set on automatic light metering and the above image was one of two where the flash fired. Admittedly it was a grey day but it was the middle of the afternoon, so I wouldn’t have thought to use the flash.

The result is striking however: increased depth and a freeze-frame sharpness…and the specular highlights! Love those.
