The Show highlights lingerie, kids wear, and sartorial gents at Kwantlen Polytechnic University

At its annual fashion event known simply as The Show, Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s design boldly went where fast fashion fears to go.

In the event April 24 at the River Rock Show Theatre, lovingly handmade children’s wear, sartorially smart men’s wear, artfully hand-dyed organic fabrics, and lingerie and swimwear that took underthings to architectural new heights showed that mad skills are one way to trump mass production in the marketplace.

In preparing to enter that outside world, the graduating students must study and deliver a fully thought-out collection for a niche in fashion that isn’t being served.

Highlights of this year’s results included men’s lines that covered the range between Kelly Kim’s skater-business suits for guys who want to look street at the office to Jan Bautista’s wildly printed retro-cocktail duds to Ellen Han’s Water St. Mode that lived up to the stylin’ street name.

Unique kids’ togs included Jilanne Mo’s SiiLi line, with artful play clothes that use technical fabric for durability; one hip little sweater/jacket had multicoloured puffs of fabric jutting out from the arm like dino spikes. Other collections ranged from Cecilia Ignacio’s tomboy streetwear Willa-Jade to Quirky Fille’s artful, era-mashing looks for confident young girls.

Swimwear came retro-pinup gorgeous in Courtenay Grant’s collection and modest in Chantel Mongovius’s Adina line, with one printed, vintage-style one-piece pulling down over the hips like a skirt.

Other lines were less categorizable, but no less memorable. Some of our faves? Natasa Nikolov’s Orro Folkloric Memoirs, with its decorative, slavic floral embroidery patterns covering one sleek white blouse over red velvet pants; or Seanna Schmuland’s Canadian artist-inspired prints with chunky water-resistant wool looks in the line Strong & Free.
