The inaugural Sound of Dragon Music Festival takes place May 9 to 11 at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews). Vancouver’s first festival devoted to Chinese music takes place in conjunction with Asian Heritage Month celebrations, with preview events taking place now until May 8 at various Vancouver venues.

The Sound of Dragon Music Festival will showcase diverse musical styles, including ancient folk and classical music, contemporary compositions, jazz, world, fusion, and avant-garde repertoire in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. The festival aims to redefine “Chinese music” and reflect Vancouver’s growing multiculturalism.

Featured guests at the Sound of Dragon Music Festival include Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra from Taiwan, Toronto-based pianist and composer Lee Pui Ming, the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, and the Orchid Ensemble.

A preview event on Monday (May 5) at 7:30 p.m. at Burnaby’s Shadbolt Centre for the Arts will feature the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra in Beyond the Walls.

Single tickets to concerts are $20 to $25, with full-day festival passes priced at $30 to $40, and three-day festival passes running $50 to $70. Tickets can be purchased online in advance.
