Michael Sam makes history: First openly gay football player drafted into NFL

Michael Sam has made history on May 10 by breaking the rainbow ceiling to become the first openly gay football player to be drafted into the NFL.

St. Louis Rams chose Sam in the seventh round of the NFL draft.

An emotional Sam broke down in tears and kissed his boyfriend Vito Cammisano on live TV. (Sam publicly came out as gay on February 9.)

Needless to say, response to the news wasn't all celebratory. Controversy arose due to the airing of the kiss between Michael Sam and his boyfriend.

As an ESPN producer pointed out, if the kiss had been edited out, it would have broken three decades of airing players kissing their partners (all of whom have been female up until this point).

If it had been censored, the network would have been accused of homophobia and discrimination.

Nonetheless, that didn't stop some athletes from taking to Twitter to tell the world what they thought.

Miami Dolphin's Don Jones tweeted that it was "horrible" and was fined for homophobic tweets. He later issued a statement to apologize.

Former Ole Miss star Marshall Henderson expressed his disgust at coverage of Sam, calling it "nasty ass shit" and hashtagging it "sickening". He later claimed the tweet was an experiment on behalf of a gay "friend" who is a psychology student who wanted to see what kind of response it would get.
