Amber Lyon makes the case for medicinal use of psychedelic drugs

Here's something different—a video of a former U.S. national news correspondent revealing how psychedelics transformed her life.

Amber Lyon appeared on Dennis Trainor Jr.'s show on Acronym TV to talk about how ayahuasca—a psychedelic brew of several South American plants—helped cure her posttraumatic stress disorder.

Lyon, a three-time Emmy winner on CNN, is also the author of Peace, Love, and Pepper Spray.

She questions whether the public has been as misled about psychedelics as it has on the medicinal benefits of marijuana.

Lyon maintains that U.S. law prohibiting psychedelic drugs is not based on science.

She cites the existence of numerous studies demonstrating that psychedelics are not neurotoxic, not addictive, and that they can cure the most stubborn cases of anxiety, depression, addiction, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

She also says that with the huge number of war veterans committing suicide, "it's vital that this medicine is made available to the public".

For more on how psychedelic drugs can combat addiction, check out this story in the Georgia Straight nearly seven years ago by Alex Roslin.

Last year, the Straight's Alexander Varty also explored the positive effects of ayahuasca in a profile of actor TJ Dawe.

This proves that what Lyon is saying isn't new. But perhaps because she's so well-known in the United States, more people might be in a mood to listen.

Former Saskatchewan researchers Drs Abram Hoffer and H Osmond were also proponents of pyschedelic drug use for alcoholism and Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception was influenced by the two.
