Yaletown shooting leads to gunfire outside Science World

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Late this morning (June 10), Twitter was abuzz with reports of shootings in Yaletown and in the Science World area.

At 12:50 p.m., Vancouver police released this update about these events:

Shortly after 11:00 a.m., police received reports of shots being fired outside of the Starbucks on Davie Street near Marinaside Crescent. When police arrived, they found a man who had been shot. Paramedics were called and he was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

A man believed to be responsible for the shooting was followed by police to the area of Science World where there was an exchange of gunfire that resulted in both the man and an officer being injured.

The victim is currently in serious condition in hospital.

The alleged shooter remains in hospital in stable condition.

The unidentified officer is being treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Police will not be providing information about the identity of the victim or the suspect at this time.

Further information will be provided when it becomes available.

Update 1: Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson issued the following statement at 4:50 p.m.:

We owe tremendous thanks for the courage and fast action shown by all Vancouver Police officers who responded today to keep our city safe. This incident was a brazen attack in broad daylight, and gun violence of any kind will not be tolerated in the City of Vancouver. Today’s events underscore the need to keep supporting the important work that Chief Jim Chu and the VPD have been doing to reduce violent crime and keep our communities safe from gun crime.

I know this has been very upsetting for the many people who witnessed the attack, and for those who live and work in the neighbourhood. My thoughts are with the victim, the injured officer, and their friends and families during this difficult time.

Update 2: Vancouver police issued this update at 5:38 p.m.:

The victim of a shooting in Yaletown remains in Hospital in stable but critical condition recovering from gunshot wounds as police continue to investigate the brazen attack.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m., a 52 year old man was out front of the Starbucks on Davie Street near Marinaside Crescent when he was approached and shot. Police officers happened to be near-by, challenged the alleged shooter and exchanged several shots.

The man fled on a bike along the seawall being pursued by police. Dozens of officers flooded the area to locate the suspect. VPD officers on the sea wall at Science World were then confronted by the suspect resulting in a second exchange of gun fire.

The suspect was shot by officers and taken into custody. Paramedics were called and he was taken to hospital in serious condition.

One officer sustained minor injuries from flying glass. She was treated at hospital and released.

The suspect also remains in hospital under police guard.

Police will not be providing information about the identity of the victim or the suspect at this time.

Vancouver style. Gregor must be proud.

Hey, I heard that you can raid a house with 15-20 cops with our tax money for pipeline graffiti protests, but a shooting will get 1/3 or 1/2 that since it's just a "shooting".

I heard shutting down Raves and making parks "noise free" after 10:30pm is legitimate also but let's continue to have our shootings, stabbings and rapes occurring...

Gotta wonder if some of the politicians we vote in even have a decent IQ?

I feel sorry for the tourists coming, they have no idea we're labelled this NFC and continue to have lackluster enforcement for shootings, stabbings and rapes. Go Van City!!!

this is why low voter turnout is good

People think Vision Vancouver puts on shootings, stabbings and rapes.

No. That would be bad for development. It is not "Green."

      Also, who cares?

“Biker Wars”, “Yet, let's still be No Fun City...“:

You guys do realize that Vancouver's safer now than at any point in the last fifteen years (as far back as I can find number for), right? And that some of the biggest gains have come during Robertson's tenure as Mayor? The crime severity index has been in steady decline since 1998. The rate of violent crime has been in decline since 2006 (and was still lower in 2006 than in 1998). Heck, the raw number of violent crimes, without even accounting for population growth, has been dropping since 2009. Your comments aren't rooted in fact.

This from later news sources- CTV - appears to be a targeted shooting - the victim had apparently recently evicted the shooter from a house he owned.

Here hoping that the victim recovers and can get back to what he loves to do best - selling and servicing bikes.

Yeah, let's put blame on our mayor and the police because some guy lost his mind and shot up a store. Sheesh! Jumping on Vision over this is like blaming your landlord because your kid broke the screen door. And the police? Sounds like they did their jobs quite well.

The victim is someone I call a friend and I would like to express my sadness and dismay at this horrifying incident and send my best wishes to him and his family, friends and those who were unfortunate enough to witness the crime.

You can always tell the IQ of a person by the intelligence - or lack thereof - of their comments. Opinions are like A-holes. Everybody has one. Guess we just have to live with the moronic comments of those idiots that need a tragic event to make their equally tragic - and senseless - comments heard.

Yeah crime may be down, but one of these days some jerk is going to miss and kill an innocent bystander...

      Please, aim carefully.

Violent crime is down everywhere, mostly because the lead in our paint and fuels has been eliminated:

If you're rational, you're much more worried that one of these days some jerk of a driver is going to injure or kill an innocent driver, cyclist, or pedestrian. Last I read, some 30,000 people are killed on North American roads every year.

      Please choose your concerns carefully.

Where's your sources, otherwise your comments are invalid and stupid. You really think crime is down? hahahah, with over 5000 domestic abuse cases last year eh?

Some people make me /facepalm ;-/
