Who Did Your Ink?: Kevvy reveals the woman behind his empowering female portraits

Who Did Your Ink? is the Straight’s weekly feature, where we ask badass Vancouverites about the talented artists, indelible stories, and, at times, questionable antics behind their most treasured tattoos.

      Whats your name? Kevvy.

What do you do? I'm a producer and writer of music, film score guy, comedy album producer, singer in Fake Shark, and bass player in Die Mannequin.

Who did your ink? I'm lucky to say that Kat Von D did all my tattoos, and will always and only do my tattoos. I have four pretty big pieces from her: one Erykah Badu portrait, one Audrey Hepburn portrait, one of kitten heads, and one of Siouxsie Sioux's eyes.

Why did you choose this artist to do your tattoo? She's my favourite artist and a close friend. She invited me to come live with her and work on music for a while and all my tattoos were pretty impulsive: “Kat! Look at this awesome photo of Erykah Badu, will you tattoo this on me?” Lucky for me, she's incredibly generous. The two portraits took about 11 hours each. Who wouldn't want a tattoo from her!?

Is there any meaning behind it? I somehow ended up getting, besides the kitties (which I refer to as Cat Von 3), portraits of strong women. I like this theme because I find it motivating and enjoyable to look at all times. Who doesn't want to look at Audrey all day long?

Who’s your favourite local tattoo artist? I've never gotten one in Vancouver, and I don't know any artists in town, sadly.

What’s next on your ink list? More portraits! PJ Harvey, Vampira, Judith O'Dea, the Burns twins from The Shining…the list is endless.
